He was born into slavery, in Missouri.
Eager to learn, he moved around,
Paying for school in every town.
At Iowa State, he found his place,
A master’s degree, he earned with grace.
A brilliant mind with a humble heart,
In the world of science, he made his start.
With peanuts, sweet potatoes, and plants galore,
He showed the farmers how to grow more.
